I insist that my children look decent most of the time. I like their faces and noses clean. Their hair must be combed or covered with a hat. They need to have matching clothing. I always send them to change their clothes if they don't look decent. Some school mornings will see several outfits before we find a winner.
However, we have a little secret...these boys look horrible when they sleep. Yes, sleep. PJs are whatever they can find and some of the combinations are really awesome.
Davis has pajamas that he has worn since he was 5. I made them for him for Christmas. They then became shorts when he got too tall. They have slowly started to fall apart and we not-so-lovingly refer to them as his Loin Cloth. (Not pictured due to the graphic nature of the photos.) He has worn these jammies for almost 7 years.
Christian usually has on his shorty's from 3 years ago, and whatever is laying around for the top. If he is wearing a shirt it is often a HUGE, red, dress of a shirt that cover his shorty's.

Jag ALWAYS has his shirt inside out and backwards. For a kid who is so particular about how others look (remember long ago the girl with the messy face who loved him? *If only I could link that here) he never cares about how he looks. Never.
Noah would prefer that his jammies match- top and bottom- but he has to make exceptions if the weather is too cold or hot. If he has a character on his PJs, then he is really happy. Mismatched two character jammies are the best.
As long as this is our little secret, then it really shouldn't matter what they wear to bed. I won't, however, let them participate in their school pajama days. That would be embarrassing.
