Roma, Day 1

In the military we have wonderful things like Columbus Day off and long weekends.  In Europe we have wonderful things like Ryan Air, a discount airlines, and 50 euro RT tickets to Rome.  What were we to do?  It was rainy and cold in Germany, but mostly sunny and warm in Rome.

It was really weird to be standing in places that we have heard of, seen in movies, or read about.  It was a wonderful experience and a great vacation.

Spanish Steps
(We went back to the apartment and watched Roman Holiday.)

A few minutes of rain.

At the top of the stairs overlooking the city.  St. Peter's is in the background.

Trevi Fountain
A very crowded place.

Legend says that if you want a return trip to Rome, you turn backwards and toss a coin into the fountain.  Davis adds that around 2000 euros is removed from the fountain daily and donated to charity.  We definitely wanted a chance at a return trip, so of course we had to toss a coin.  Problem was that we'd used up all our change and so only 3 of us will be able to return.  I, of course, quickly took the first coin and tossed it in.

Christian had his own coin in his pocket so he got to toss one in.

Anya, being the littlest, got a coin but it didn't go very far so Noah fished it out and tossed it again.  I'm not sure which of them will get the return trip.

Jag didn't get a coin.  He isn't happy about it.

Rome has the most obelisks in the world.
So the downside of flying to Rome was that our flight left at 6AM.  We had to leave our house by 3:00, drive to the airport 1 1/2 hr. away and then wait at the airport. These poor kids were very tired, but we were in Rome and there was NO time to rest.  We hit the ground running and they were awesome.  By the time we crashed for the night everyone was more than ready.
Anya sleeping and the boys wanting to.

Piazza Navona
(Have you seen Angels and Demons?  This is the fountain.  The movie takes place all over Rome, we watched that one as well.)

They all laughed, because I was clueless as to the backside of the fountain right there.

The front of the fountain.

Yes, that was all one day!  We woke up in Germany and spent the day in Rome.  The smallness of Europe is fantastic.
